She stood by me when I had two legs and stuck around when I had one. Keeper. (Instagram/kai_mckenzie)
22-year-old Kai McKenzie was shredding barrels at North Shore Beach in Port Macquarie, New South Wales, when things got bitey. A massive 15-ft Great White Shark launched out of nowhere and decided Kai’s leg looked like lunch. Only, halfway through chewing, the shark apparently decided it wasn’t feeling the flavor profile and spat the leg back out. The shark literally returned the limb, which is crazy disrespectful behavior from the shark. Could you imagine tasting so bad that even a shark finds you unappetizing? Perhaps he’s just keeping a close eye on his calorie count.
The leg later washed ashore like a boomerang made of flesh and bone. I can’t imagine some poor kid found the severed leg while floating in the ocean and got tapped on the arm like it was saying, “G’day mate.” That’s therapy for life, minimum. Meanwhile, emergency services airlifted both Kai and his moody, non-committal leg to the hospital, presumably hoping they could just play a quick round of medical LEGO and stick it back on. I wonder what the helicopter ride was like? Who got the window seat? Did the leg need a seatbelt? Unfortunately for Kai, the leg couldn’t be reattached. But Kai? He’s taking it like a champ and has now officially entered his “villain arc.”

Fresh out of the hospital, the first thing Kai had to say wasn’t anything soft or inspirational like “grateful to be alive.” No. Instead, he came out swinging, declaring: “I’m just going to f*** s*** up with a prosthetic.” Hard not to root for that kind of energy. Totally gnarly mindset dude. In the meantime, he’s cruising around on crutches, which he says “stick out like dog balls.” That’s a medical prognosis, by the way. Or maybe it’s just an extremely Australian way of describing a temporary inconvenience. Either way, it fits.
Surprisingly, Kai claims he’s got no beef with sharks and doesn’t want the one that bit him to be hunted down. In fact, he seems kinda hang loose with the whole thing. Which makes sense, considering the shark already apologized the only way a shark can: by not eating him. Whether his future prosthetic leg comes with a built-in surfboard or nunchucks remains to be seen, but one thing’s for sure—Kai’s legacy will always be remembered. He’s already back surfing a new wave, one leg down, two middle fingers up.
