Football, or soccer as we call it here, can be extremely exciting. Of course, that’s few and far between, since sometimes it’s a defensive battle for 90 minutes that ends without a goal. But when a team wins, fans will sometimes go absolutely insane and swarm onto the field. That’s expected behavior for humans, but in Tanzania, that recently happened with bees, causing the game to be suspended.
Usually, you wouldn’t swarm the field unless it was a championship game, maybe with one of the biggest teams around. No one told that to the bees, however, who went on a rampage in a stupid preseason game between City FC Abuja and JKU FC in Babati, Tanzania. The game wasn’t over, either; it was in the 78th minute, tied 1-1, when the bees took to the field. If you thought that players often overreact by throwing themselves to the ground after being barely touched to get a penalty, that’s child’s play compared to seeing two entire teams do it… even though there’s no such thing as a yellow card for a yellowjacket.
“He stung me!” 22 players dramatically screamed simultaneously while dropping to the ground. “I think it was that one up there,” a player said, pointing to one of about a million insects buzzing around him. The refs were unable to do anything either, as they were also on the ground. In fact, along with the players and refs, even a cameraman dropped to the ground as the bees rampaged around the stadium.
There wasn’t any particular reason pinpointed as to why the swarm happened. Some blamed freak weather, while others said that the vibrations from the game might have awoken them. We just think that it’s because bees like a good preseason football match with their boys. They wanna hit the stadium, throw back a few, and catch a buzz. And hey, if someone gets stung, that’s not their problem. The good news for City FC Abuja was that after the bee-lay in the game, they managed to go on to win the match. As for the bees, there’s no word on if they have season tickets, but if you’re at a future game there and your team loses, that might not just be the sting of defeat you’re feeling.
This story is based on fully factual news, but if we got it wrong, blame these guys, we’re just here to make it funny.
