In what’s being described as the most Australian crime since a man punched a kangaroo to save his dog, authorities in Adelaide have arrested a man for masterminding a theft operation.
The criminal empire, comprised entirely of plastic bricks, plush Pikachus, and one extremely judgmental Barbie, came crashing down over the weekend when police executed a search warrant at the man’s Royal Park residence and found 2,500 stolen toys. Neighbors report they suspected something was up when the man’s recycling bin was full of instruction manuals and blister packs every week since 2022.
Pretty sure this is how it all went down… (arkusha/depositphotos)
The raid revealed a veritable toy aisle apocalypse: three trucks were needed to haul the stuff away. “We didn’t even have this many toys after Toys ‘R’ Us went belly-up,” one officer reportedly muttered while tripping over a NERF Blaster and face-planting into a Pikachu plushie.
Among the evidence seized were 1,700 unopened Lego boxes with a projected street value of $13 billion. The suspect, a 41-year-old man with enough soft toys to qualify as a Build-A-Bear franchise, had allegedly been reselling the loot online under the username “BlockDaddy69.” Authorities believe the plan was to sell them online to unsuspecting parents who didn’t realize “discount Lego” is as much a myth as “snake-free shipping from Australia.”
The suspect reportedly only intended to steal “one big set,” since Lego prices now rival beachfront property. Police believe it was either the 7,541-piece Star Wars Millennium Falcon, the $850 Eiffel Tower, or possibly a 1:1 scale Lego model of Adelaide itself, which tragically remains unfinished because someone misplaced a grey corner piece.
The first attempt was to make a 1:1 scale LEGO version of Sydney, but the Opera House was so poor that they abandoned the project. (wiredforlego/Flickr)
But what really tipped off police? Not the massive online listings. Not the neighbors noticing he was playing Pokémon Monopoly by himself with six dozen Charizards. It was his heavily scarred feet. Somewhat confirming the theory, the man reportedly confessed while being offered a pair of Crocs in holding. “My God, they’re like clouds,” he sobbed, clutching the foam shoes as if they were long-lost children.
The stolen items, which included Hello Kitty merch, Thomas the Tank Engine toys, and enough Barbie Dreamhouses to build a mid-tier real estate empire, are now safely in police custody. Thomas, in particular, is now cooperating with authorities, but only after they promised him unlimited coal and witness protection on the Isle of Sodor. Thomas has also already lawyered up and released a statement blaming Diesel 10 for everything.
