Oh, say, can you see who that was singing the National Anthem at the Charlotte Knights game? North Carolina baseball fans could, and while some may have been taken aback by the vocalist singing our country’s most patriotic song not by Kid Rock, others were lovin’ it. That’s because it wasn’t Mr. Rock belting out the Francis Scott Key standard, but some other clown. And not just any other clown, but McDonald’s spokes-clown, Ronald McDonald.

Clowns have always been seen as kinda creepy, as anyone who’s watched It or seen a clown ever can pretty much attest to. And while a lot of what’s going on in America in 2026 is a clown show in general, having one that’s the face of a corporate behemoth sing about the origin of America at a baseball game doesn’t really do anything to dispel that. Given this was at a minor league game, there weren’t as many eyes on it, since neither the Knights nor their opponents, the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimps, are on many people’s radar, or at least they weren’t until the internet got involved.

This may be one of the first times anyone has heard any clown sing, let alone Ronald McDonald, who hasn’t appeared in many commercials for the fast food chain since the 2016 trend of killer clown sightings (nope, not creepy at all). There was a semi-legitimate reason for his appearance at the game, but even that falls apart after a bit of research (aka Google). Wednesday, May 6th, was McHappy Day, which raises awareness and funds for Ronald McDonald House charities. Good cause, right? Actually, yes – but this was in Canada, not America, and we can’t even find any proof of it happening in America, although the charities do exist here.

So yes, a corporate mascot was singing an American anthem at a minor league baseball game for a Canadian charity that doesn’t seem to exist here. Seems legit, eh? Not according to someone we caught up with who, hypothetically, went to the game. “Ronald has got some pipes on him, but someone needs to teach him the lyrics,” they told us. “I don’t remember the real lyrics saying, ‘Oh say can you see by the dawn’s golden crispy hash browns.’ And I’m pretty sure he sang ‘Land of the fries and the home of the brave.’ But at least it was Ronald McDonald and not that Burger King, the only fast food mascot even creepier than a clown. No Kings!”
