At this point, Calvin Broadus is a bit of a cartoon. Better known as Snoop Doggy Dogg, whose 1993 debut album Doggystyle helped make gangsta rap mainstream, he’s since become a cuddly mascot for marijuana the same way Jimmy Buffet was for margaritas.
He was cleared for a medical marijuana license by his Doctor, Dre. (JDunbarPhoto/depositphotos)
He’s played the Super Bowl Halftime show, started a youth football league, and has made so many endorsements that he must’ve been high when he signed some of them (he was). However, there’s at least one individual who must be more of a cat person, as she’s called for Mr. Dogg to be banned from the AFL Grand Final.
If you’re unfamiliar with the AFL Grand Final, it’s possibly because you’re not Australian. AFL stands for Australian Football League. And because we’re not Australian, we frankly don’t know what it means either. American football? Nope. Soccer? Also nope. Rugby? Not that either, but kind of? We’ve given up on trying to figure out what the nebulous sport even is, but in Australia, the Grand Final is essentially the Super Bowl of Australian rules football. And Snoop is headlining the pre-game – unless Greens Senator Sarah Hanson-Young gets her way, as she doesn’t want the “slur merchant” performing.
Hanson-Young has a bit of a point. In much the way that the AFL Grand Final seems specifically Australian, she thinks a native artist should be playing the opening show instead of the Long Beach, California native. Referencing that an AFL athlete was suspended for four weeks for making a homophobic slur, she commented, “The irony is not lost on many of us that while Izak Rankine gets dumped, Snoop Dogg gets $2 million to play his misogynistic, homophobic music on our turf.”
This is what Aussie Rules Football looks like. Sometimes, more people watch it, too. ( ncousla/depositphotos)
Dogg has been in the news lately as well, but the “Gz Up, Hoes Down” and “Murder Was The Case” rapper, who was arrested in a case regarding murder (and acquitted), is also making headlines for being scared of movies. While Weapons is pretty scary and Sinners had its moments, he’s actually terrified by Disney movies because there might be a same sex couple in them. Yep, you read that correctly. The rapper, who’s served time in prison, said he’s “scared to go to the movies” because his grandson might ask him a question he can’t answer, which happened when he saw Lightyear. Maybe he can only make words make sense when he’s got a mic in front of him?
Regardless, it doesn’t seem like Hanson-Young will get her wish, as the AFL CEO commented that it’s more the cuddly SodaStream and Solo Stove spokesperson they hired than the guy who wrote “Hoes, Money and Clout” 27 years ago. “He has spoken publicly about his past, he has changed, and today he is a grandfather, philanthropist, helps rehabilitate youth, and is a global entertainer who has performed at both the Super Bowl and the Olympic Closing Ceremony.” As long as he doesn’t see any same sex couples at the event, he shouldn’t be too derailed.
This story is based on fully factual news, but if we got it wrong, blame these guys, we’re just here to make it funny.
